I am more of an IV person, because I once had a high overall IV Feebas, but I had a male Feebas that had superior stats in the areas that it needed. I think it was Sp. Def. and HP, while also having the nature I needed to evolve it to a Milotic. Needless it say, it felt so weird having a male Milotic, because they always seemed more girly to me. Gender is a close 2nd. If I can, I'd get away with females, because it'd be cool that way to defeat another trainer with beefed up female Pokemans.
Again for me, IVs and sometimes nature trumps gender. But because of Soul Silver and the luck I've been having trying to find strong male pokemon, I may try to have an all girl's team with high IVs for the lulz. Also their reactions for when they like you gets really cute. I am not sure if high happiness male pokemon ever hug or cuddle up with you, especially if you are a male trainer.
