The start doesn't have much to confuse you with, but after a while all the skipped scenes add up until it just doesn't make much sense without reading the novel beforehand. The problem is that when you start the anime, you may feel like reading the novel to make sense of it, but by that point you'd have spoiled yourself too much to fully enjoy the original.
If you really want, just the anime's adaptation is enough to cover the first arc, so you could skip episode 1. I wouldn't recommend doing so, as the novel gives you a way better feel for each character and gives you more information on them, but a lot of people are turned off by how slow episode 1 (referring to the novel) moves.
