Are they not worthy of being deemed competitive players because they don't follow today's competitive Melee standards? I'm going to need some clarification.

Recreation is just about having fun.I strongly disagree with your way of differentiating hardcore from casual. I play to win in any multiplayer scenario, as do most gamers. Choosing not to wavedash does not revoke my competitive gamer status; those are my own views on the game's multiplayer and don't relate to how badly I want to win against my opponent. Being competitive typically means being aggressive, but being aggressive doesn't have to mean resorting to what I consider cheap and broken.

Being a competitive gamer does not mean completely disregarding fun and focusing 100% on winning. That's definitely being competitive, but not living up to that doesn't make you a casual.
