I've already tried to prove how she in unappealing. the show portrays her as the average loner shut-in emo girl with nary but a handful of friends and an unattractive appearance.

Understandable.
The show's tendency to portray her as unattractive has confused me from the very beginning. There is nothing too outlandish about her appearance, but the viewer is forced to believe the contrary due to the opinions of her friends and family. I believe this is a tongue in cheek reference to society's standards of beauty.
