What was wrong with Super Paper Mario
#1
I'm not asking you. I'm telling you.

First, the story, plot, and characters are just as good as the first two games. No complaints here. It was well written and very fun to advance.

The problem comes in at the game play. I was a huge fan of the turn-based RPG system of Paper Mario. It was a fun experience, and took some thinking to take down the more powerful enemies. The character customization added a level of depth to the game, and the numbers of attacks you could use stopped the game from getting dull.

In Super Paper Mario, they completely rape the battle system. No more turn based battles in front of an audience for most of the game. No more character customization. Once you reached a certain number of points, you leveled up. When you leveled up, your damage and health increased. No more customization. They took pretty much the core out of the game.

The core values of the regular Mario games are platforming. From the original to Galaxy, most have been about trying to get to the end of the level without dying. With Paper Mario, things were different. There was still platforming and puzzle solving, but that only encompassed half the game. The other half was the battles and the system around it. They made Super Paper Mario nothing but the first half.

I can understand why Nintendo removed the whole battle system, to help gameplay flow more. However, I never felt that the transitions from walking to fighting to walking was not a very time-consuming thing, unless I kept getting attacked by enemies I kept running from. In Super Paper Mario, I felt like I delt with enemies too easily. A few stomps and the enemies were dead and I kept moving. I stopped about halfway through the game because I became bored of the game's battle system; nothing really new or interesting popped up, like upgrading shoes or hammers or finding new badges in the second.

Overall, Super Paper Mario needed more RPG and less platformer. I do like me some platformers, but I play paper mario for the RPG value mixed in with platforming.
