I don't see why would anyone try to hack maplestory for money, there is not much you can make (if they try to sell things they take from other people they will cause a huge deflation, and will probably be caught in no-time).
There are websites with a much weaker security (lets not forget GMS and most of the other maples managed to stay safe for a long time, which is not easy for a game targeted by so many hackers) that can lend a potential hacker much more money or information that can be sold.
My personal assumption on this case is, it was either done "for the lulz", in order to get "geek pride" among the other hackers, as a proof of concept ("yes we can" style) or as a revenge against either Nexon or the MapleStory community as a whole.
EDIT: also, a bit offtopic, what the pineapple is the points thing and from where did I get 11 of them?
I disagree with you.
First, many items can be sold through MTS. Which is akin to laundering an item.
Second , with several of the people that have been hacked we have been able to locate their good in a store in fm being sold for below the going rate. The probably be caught in no time statement is a joke. Who is going to catch them? Especially when it looks like they are using hacked accounts to set up the shop.
Third, They sell mesos via their online website. That is how the mesos are being converted to cash.
Fourth, I don't think they care about the long term economics of the game. There has already been some deflation take effect in Mardia as these hacked items hit the market. Its hard to sell a zhelm for 50M anymore.
Fifth, I really doubt its being done for pride. They haven't shown themselves or bragged about it and they continue to hit one account after another after another. A friend was hit two days ago (Haven't seen him since, said he was going to quit) told me he lost 4 bil worth of items and mesos. If these online sites are selling 100M mesos for 7 dollars that was a $280.00 theft right there.
Sixth, Who's to say they aren't hacking other games also.
