Buying NX only gives non-islanders an advantage over people who don't buy NX (MTS is only unfair to off-island people). The equips that increase speed, jump, att, DEX, etc that islanders can wear are fairly cheap, so someone who bought NX doesn't actually have an advantage in acquiring those items over someone who started with no NX at all.
Speed, jump, and weapon att. make very little difference for islanders, since we OHKO most of the time anyway and since mushrooms and snails spawn in mobs. Highers stats make a much bigger difference for off-island chars.
Unless your islander is your only character in all of MapleStory, it's really easy to make enough NX to buy good equips by selling items on other chars. Just ask some of the islanders who have good MTS equips. You can MTS on-island stuff like Omok pieces, red snail shells, scrolls, etc.
Walking to the nearest location that has NX cards or buying NX online is obviously a bit faster than selling random items for NX, but that's a difference of a few days of waiting at most. You don't have to spend hours merchanting to get enough NX for good equips for an islander.
