I had the same problem with squids. It took a while to learn.
You should only do Squids if they 2hko you. 1hko makes it impossible to gain any real XP there because you WILL get hit.
You cannot talk or take your eyes off of the screen while actively hunting squids. If you have to do that go on a rope and then to Cash Shop.
To actually survive nearly 100% of the time, have HP autopot on your pet, and also always tap the pot button the moment your HP falls below the level where another hit would kill you. That means tapping the pot button each time a squid touches you, or after a Lethal Squid has hit you with its ranged attack a couple times. Practically speaking, Autopot becomes basically a backup; I almost always potted myself by this point. Be generous in your pot expenditures in your later stages as a Bowman. You simply cannot afford to let your HP fall to the point where another hit will kill you. Wasting a few extra pots is not nearly as bad as dying an extra 4 times a day. And keep in mind that while your HP is above the point where another hit will kill you, you almost likely will NOT die. Once you get potting right down in Squids, you will die once a day, and probably less.
The potions I used were Ginseng Roots for HP and Supreme Pizzas for MP. That means each pot you use recovers both MP and HP and is useful in every situation. I personally found those to be the most useful potions.
