The competitive SSBM discussion thread
#23
Goals Wrote:This might seem out of place but I haven't seen a SSBM thread anywhere. How do you guyz get so proz? :[

I just got the game (lol I'm a new Wii user). How long have you been play especially, Kawasari?

P.S. I'm fond of Peach :p she's fun to play.

I play often, as in.. almost 'regularly'. Around 5 days a week. I play against my little brother, who does not play competitively, but knows about the competitive metagame aspect of SSBM. He can wave-dash, but that's the extent of his abilities. I also play against pros like my friends, who would most likely kick my ass 65% of the time. I'll only win if I can pull in decently timed Bairs and Rests. I've been playing Smash since my Junior Year in High School, I'm currently a Junior now in University. 4 years or so, haha. I knew about Smash way before that though. There's a local cafe that I go to, and gamers are usually there. Of course, all of these gamers are my friends since High School, so heh. They usually play Smash really late at night, and I'll stop by to practice a bit. What they've done in my township, is held a couple SSBM tourneys. I've never won any, to be honest. People will literally come down from Pittsburgh just to attend. There are some seriously great pros in my town, some of them, I won't even bother playing against because I've witnessed how good they are. @___@

Most of the players in my town mains a variety of characters. Personally, I know there's a:

-Captain Falcon/Bowser/Jigglypuff player (my bestfriend @_@)
-Peach player
-Fox/Ganon player
-2 Falco players (they're really beast..)
-Sheik/Zelda player
-Jig player (me)

They switch characters around a lot, but I think I'm the only one that uses Jigglypuff the most.

Takebacker Wrote:I guess since i just started brawl+, i should post discussion here.

How am i supposed to incorporate grabs into a rest combo in this game? I don't know how hard it was in melee (apparently it was way easier), or if it's the same way in brawl+ compared to brawl.

Also, how do you (khoi) edge guard with jigglypuff? Sing guard? Edge hogging?

Grab to rest is basically an up-throw when your opponent is at low percentile and a short-jump into Rest. It's really hard to do at times, if your opponent has great reflexes and either:

a) DI's out of it
b) Up-jumps in-midair

Either way, causing you to miss. If you miss against Captain Falcon, you're pretty much done for. It's game over. He'll either knee you right in the nuts, or Falcon Punch your face. It's pretty much automatic death if you miss a Rest on Captain Falcon. <_< What I usually do is Up-smash, backjump and then Rest, but this takes precise timing. I'll only grab to up-throw, and then rest only if I'm certain I'll land it. In one of my two videos up on YT, I backjumped into Rest against a Fox.

3 ways I personally use Rest in Melee:

1) Up-smash, back jump into them while they're in mid-air and then Rest.
2) Up-smash into up-tilt (Jigs basically does a strong headbutt which sends your opponent upwards, then as they land, you 'juggle' them with your foot, and then..) .. and Rest, and I only do this at low-percentile because Up-Smash -> Up Tilt -> Smash is only effective then. At higher percentages, your Up-Smash sends them up too high, or your Up-tilt kicks them up too high, making it harder to aim and Rest, as well as forcing you to jump higher. <_< [Actually, look at EarthAdept's video, that = Uptilt into Rest. Only thing it didn't have was the up-smash, but he was so precised at it, he didn't need it. Damn, Magus is good..]
3) Grab -> Up Throw -> Short hop into Rest

As for edge-guarding, I've done two things. Literally edge-hog, and just hang on the edge when they're off-screen, if it's Falco, it's already over. Just grab onto edge, if you think his Illusion might hit you, just tap 'down' to under and then bair his ass out, or spam fair like a mofo til he's out. Or if you're on platform, just short-hop into bair over and over and over.

Sh't. I've seen that already, actually. Crazy sh't. My friends can't even double-stick DI/teching, but I'm trying to learn how to do it at home right now. This is Double-stick DI (for you non competitive Smashers, or newcomers):

PS: Actually, after my Public Speaking class (which is at 2 PM), I'll be heading down to the TV-Lounge/gaming room here at my uni, and I'll be playing SSBM against LOLbrawl people. I need the practice, so I let them gang up on me via team-battle, but team-attack is on. They can choose the stage, as long as it isn't a gay stage... Usual rules.
