This sounds more and more like some hacker(s) gotten hold of Nexon's encrypted password list along with the IGN, userID and possibly email too. If that is true, then they are using some form of dictionary hack to pick off those that had a easy password, and maybe selectively using brute force (generating all combinations) for the targeted possible rich maplers.
The defense for this would be to change password often and with a strong password (one with numbers embedded into it and not a word in the dictionary).
