Subconsciously, I think. First impressions do count, and appearance is the only thing you have to shape your opinion of people until you get to know them on a personal level.
That said, if/when you do get to know someone, outward appearance doesn't matter so much. Then it's the person's character that shapes how you see him/her. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
