Letting them win will teach them plenty provided you make them work for it. When people were teaching me, they'd play me and point out mistakes, but they'd also let me take back moves at important places. The games lasted a long time though realistically I didn't stand a chance against them. The intense thinking that accompanies a properly played chess game is not diminshed by this process, it's just stretched out by a lot. And the learning experience is what counts, not whether they won or lost. Most people -- especially beginners -- grow bored very quickly if they get annihilated after like 5 minutes. By stretching the game out you make it INTERESTING for them, and that's what'll keep them playing, and ultimately make them better at it.
