Butterfree had a very legitimate reason for being released. Lapras, kinda as well, but not so much. Muk was always the box pokemon, like Ash's Tauros.
Ash also got suckered out of his Primape, which he just got to listen to him.

I still think Pidgeot was the biggest spit in the face. He promised he'd be back for it, and never saw it again.
Poor Pidgeot. Not even valued enough to collect dust at Prof. Oak's lab.
