Tales is a game AND an anime. But it depends. Most of the anime is like a prequel to the game itself, or it happens between the midst of the storyline, or even DURING the storyline.
In Tales of Eternia, which was the FIRST Tales game to be adapted into anime, the storyline revolved around the heroes being washed ashore onto a new island. Which, was not in the game, AT ALL. But judging by how the story went, you'll instantly know that it was before the '2nd' disc of the game.
