No aran combo counter?

Ok its frustrating me to no end, I'm level 16 and even if I attack monsters the combo counter thingy doesn't start up, is there something special I'm meant to do there or is my character stuffed before it's even started?

Make sure that you've at least 1sp in ComboAbility D;
