It was stated that the GS ball was supposed to be the start of a Celebi arc in Jhoto, but they decided to drop it since Celebi was receiving its own movie. So they decided to just put it in the past and hope viewers forget about it. It's not like that's the first time they've done that kinda thing.

It seems that the anime hates continuity, and would rather "reset" the plot every now and then. the most they do is a brief 1 episode cameo where an old character comes back just to please the fans, but then leaves for one reason or another.

Oh, and what ever happened to being a "master"? I mean, it wasn't in the original Japanese version, and was just added to the dub to market the "CATCH EM ALL LOL (Buy em all!)" slogan of the games, but they don't even continue with it anymore. Ash hasn't mentioned "catching
em all" or "becoming a pokemon master" since like Jhoto or something.
