The basic rule of things is that various segments of humanity can be gullible or stupid, at least in certain things, depending on the person. PhDs and MDs get scammed just like construction workers. And when all you have to do is send out tens of thousands of automated messages, and wait for the suckers to come in, it's profitable and cheap.
I love my spamblocker. Though way back when I got my primary account I did not know to keep my address off the internet, GMail's spamblocker is so thorough that I get over 3000 spam messages a month, but there are almost never any in my actual inbox.
