Memes - where the hell do they come from?

I refuse to post outside of forums related entirely to video-games. But from what I've learned meme's come from idiots who have too much time, I'm more interested in the why and how it spread. The how is internet forums, and the why is still unknown. =o

The "why" is that it's in the nature of social interaction. If the idea of memes is oversimplified to the degree that I mentioned in my previous post, then it can also be connected to the concepts of simple discussion. Just talking with someone can provide the same sort of interaction that a meme thrives on. Basically, we wouldn't be social creatures without memes. I personally would say that the development of early language is similar in concept to meme "infection"; if not for this principle of socialization, we wouldn't be able to understand anyone else. Humans would only be able to look inwardly.
