lvl 8 eh? A lich would make to be a tough encounter for sure, but I don't think it's entirely out of your league. At any rate, a lich was just an example of a monster template. There are a LOT more milder templates such as water, shadow, axiomatic, etc.
What I can't get my head around is that 1d6 auto-hit no save attack. There's almost nothing in the whole game that could do that (no chance to avoid whatsoever) in the battlefield. You sure your DM isn't just rolling for you behind your backs?
Also, when bees hit you with their stinger, it says in the MM that they die afterwards. It could be that the bees simply chose not to attack with their stingers. This isn't entirely true in reality, but w/e. But simply put, you need more description, and you can't be denied seeing a stick sticking out of da butt unless you were blind the whole fight.
