Technically England only standardized what we now know as Football. If you want to get into who invented it the Chinese have a pretty good freaking argument about it.

But, yeah, in 1863 Trinity standardized the game into legitimate rules and it developed into what Football/Soccer is today.

Well, technically, we could argue a lot of sports were thought in a similar way The US claims to be the creator of Basketball as we know it but Incas and Mayas would beg to differ, since they played a similar sport 700 years ago. Same principle would apply to Baseball and Cricket, known to share the same roots in the past (stool-ball), etcetera etcetera.
