To obtain the flute, use a hammer and break the rock in the overworld on the far top right part of the map, then kill the fireball bros in the level in the new area to obtain the flute. You can warp to world 8 that way.
No. That way takes too long. Pretty much need to clear all of World 2 to do so. Also, you need TWO flutes if you want to get all the way to World 8. That then means clearing World 2 TWICE. Fun fun.
All I'll say is:
World 1-3 + 1-Fortress stage is all you need to get to World 8.
