The reason why they're releasing new hand helds such as the PSP2 and DS2 is to counter the next-generation of smart-phone which will have HD-tv capabilities among other things. What Sony and Nintendo feel is that the Iphone and it offsprings are siphoning their sales because their capabilities are pulling ahead of the handhelds. The DS probably could be used for a few more years while companies adjust to produce games that can take advantage of these upgrades. The handheld war is turning into a pc war at this point with Nintendo and Sony trying to 1-up each other while smart phones invade also. The downside is by putting a chip that has the performance equal/superior to a upper-tier GeForce 8 series graphics cards into the PSP2, you will probably pay about the price of a PS3 for the PSP2.
Personally, I wouldn't mind the DS getting better processing power so that the game can be as good as the cut scenes.
