I've started actually playing on the ground more than the air as Zidane, where possible, particularly against melee-only characters (Cloud is a perfect example). Tidal Flame once or twice, then rush the enemy while they're dodging it and use Free Energy (for extra cool points, dodge into the air to attack - it looks pretty badass to flip over your opponent and unleash FE). Good timing will result in them not being able to dodge both attacks - they'll either get hit with TF or dodge right into your FE. Against characters that have a long, spinning/blocking animation, I've found Shift Break to be completely effective if timed correctly. Scoop Energy and Solution 9 are mostly distractions and hit and run, as they're easy to dodge/block and do little damage. They're also good for keeping me airborne in one spot. Stellar Circle 5 deflects almost any attack (This includes the Emperor's Flare) back at the user (Exception I've found so far is Shantotto's Poison, it simply destroys it) and crushes enemy defense. It also has amazing vertical range, good for someone trying to attack from above.
Only thing I find difficult about Zidane is his lack of strong BRV attacks. He has a few close range options (which I don't recommend, other characters will usually win out in close comboat), and some weak and predictable long range ones that leave you pretty much open to an attack. His strength is his HP attacks, which are very fun to use.
