i work on a military base (not in the military though) i've mad a lot of great military friends and it sucks every time they get stationed somewhere else. at least your boyf isn't in the navy, they go out to sea often, sometimes as long as 6 months, maybe more. the hardest part will probably be boot camp, i don't think they're allowed to leave or talk on the phone. i think the only form of contact you can have is by mail. also, military people get a certain amount of vacation days each month and they will always be off on weekends and holidays.
