Most of my teachers give out an entire calendar listing all of the homeworks, tests, and quizzes for the entire semester on the first day of classes. And then the same for the second semester. This works really well for me basically tells me how I need to budget my time in order to be fully prepared for the upcoming tests. They also make homework worth like an fifth of your entire grade, so in order to actually get an A, you NEED to do your homework. No extra credit is given because extra credit is just stupid. My one history teacher in 10th grade didn't count homeworks for anything and had 15 points of extra credit on every test. It was obscene. People who would normally fail a history class were passing with 100s.
Also, it helps that the majority of teachers at my school love their job and make sitting in a class for 47 minutes awesome. :]
