Learning at school CAN be fun, this mostly depends on the teacher/subject you're doing. I think students should be able to pick the courses they want to follow earlier. Here in The Netherlands, students can make some adjustments in their course packet in the 10th grade, although loads of subjects are mandatory.
For example, I chose Geography, Economics and Management&organisation. I enjoy these subjects, but I am also stuck with subjects like: Art, History, German and Physics. Subjects I couldn't care less about, subjects I hate.
My grades are also significantly higher on the subjects I like.
Having a good teacher helps too, at a teacher that is compassionate for his job/subject, I notice that I get way higher grades then at teachers that ''Are just there because they couldn't get any other job'' or '' I know what I'm talking about, I just don't know how to explain it to you''.
(Sadly we have to many of these teachers.)
A teacher who knows when to give homework is nice too. Why give homework to people who totally understand the material the teacher explained? It's just an unneeded drag for students.(Good) Teachers know who have trouble with the subject and they can give them homework/practice assignments accordingly.
I think teachers should have a higher income, because teachers are important, and teachers are needed to make good, smart students.
Teachers should also be filtered out in some way. Dump the bad ones, and attract new (good) teachers with high incomes.
Ofcourse how well you do at school also comes from yourself. But this speaks for itself. If you just come to school to rebel, and distract other children who DO want to study and gain knowledge, get the hell out.
