Never tried testing the effects of ducking.
Basically, the mob stops attacking you with it's special attacks, but it will still pursue you physically (touch). The barrel breaks the moment the enemy actually lands a hit on you. I rarely get hit with the barrel. For example, on a stroll from the entrance of Time Temple to Oblivion 4 (~15 maps of monsters to bypass) the barrel breaks maybe once or twice. If you are hit the moment the barrel comes on, it won't break; the invincibility time for the barrel is the same as without it, but since it breaks in one hit anyway, it doesn't really matter.
