The 5/3 thing assumes you're pure STR, for simplicity's sake. So if you are pure STR (meaning 0 DEX, somehow), it'll be completely accurate. Most chars have enough STR compared to DEX that it'll get a reasonable estimate. But if you're really high DEX, it won't work that way.

You can definitely get exact results by using the damage formula, which has long been known (the one I've posted above, and Dusk used in his calculations). It's the issue of conveniently estimating from a given damage range that's being discussed, which in most reasonable cases works using Joe's 5/3 rule. You can contrive a situation to throw it off, but it's a moot point anyway because it's not supposed to be 100% accurate. Just handy and relatively easy to do.
