Absolutely not true. You can always alternate between cardio and resistance (Which is what I do); it's been working for me for a while.

Also, doing crunches works on your core and ab muscles, but doesn't necessarily burn stomach fat. Burning calories or reducing your caloric intake will burn fat everywhere, no matter how you do it. Your stomach is the last place where your fat goes away. So, lifting weights and cardio work your muscles AND burn fat, only with one doing something better than the other.

You should just continue what you're doing now, but don't stress over using machines. Also, muscle; eat a lot of protein. A LOT of protein. <_< I always have at least 100% (62g) of the RDA of protein a day, but usually it's always around 90g.
