I formed TradeMark the day guilds came out (Jan 23, 2006, wasn't it?) and tried making it into a cool group of people. That eventually did happen, and we had a lot of great times. We never got huge, though. After like a year, too many people quit playing to be anything anymore. I disbanded and moved the name to my mule.
I used to play constantly with a good friend back then, so we decided to try out actually joining "popular" guilds. Alchemists and ArtofWar were the ones we spent time in. I liked AoW and had fun with them, but they were unfair to my friend and kicked her (she was "rude," caused problems/drama, w/e). I left because of that. I was with Alchemists after that until the guild hacking took them down. The leader already didn't play anymore, so we formed Momentary. Since Momentary was basically everyone I liked and thought was awesome from Alchemists, that Summer ('08) was probably the most fun I've ever had on MS. But then I ended up losing those friends to quitting, as well...
I left Momentary because the fun times and fun people were gone, and I didn't like the way the guilds we aligned with were becoming. I rejoined my own TradeMark and have been there since. It's just me, my two best friends from real life and one great guy from Momentary who still plays rarely. I'm usually the only one on, but I don't mind. I've become a very solo person in MS.
That's my guild story. To directly answer your questions, I join for fun. Nowadays most people in MS just suck, so it's better being in my own guild. I left guilds because of friends quitting, a friend being mistreated and the guild hack.
