Do you know why it's popular? Because of it's Marketing potential and ability to spread news very quickly, unlike Facebook and others Twitter is instant and their real-time searching is second to none. Twitter can be a very powerful marketing tool, that's why every big company/celebrity has one.
What do celebrities anounce on their twitter? Album releases, tours, etc, because it's easy like that.
