My assumption-The Aran race were the protectors of a remote tribe near Leafre that were obliged to protect the land and the refugees that had come to stay with them. Helena foresaw an attack coming from the Black Magician and built a boat to save the refugees and the Aran race possibly. However, a problem occurred when one of the refugee children wandered off on the day they planned to escape and the boat had already begun to leave while the Aran were bringing him back and they had decided it would be best to stay back and fight the Black Magician's army. However, the Black Magician won and cursed the remaining Aran's to exist in an icy coffin and in turn ripped the area of Lienne off of Ossyria. In the future a team of excavators uncover the Aran trapped in their icy tomb and awaken them as a last resort to ward off the Black Magician who has once again returned.
