I believe you have to talk to Manji first, not Chrishrama. This quest tells the story of how the "legendary hero" Tristan saved Manji's life by throwing himself in front of Balrog. Manji kept Tristan's sword, which was utterly corrupted and useless due to the sheer evil of Balrog.

To OP, I would hold on to it if it's rare like you say it is. Who knows what it could be used for.
EDIT: Wait, did the Black Armor Piece come from a monster called "Chief of ___" or w/e they're called? They're suppose to be floating black armor monsters.
