Glad to see some people picking it up. :p And yeah, you don't NEED to watch the older Macross series to appreciate this. The main background info is given to you bit by bit, before the opening song in some episodes. One series that I should have recommended to watch before is Macross Zero. Episode 10 of Frontier referrences it heavily. Zero is only a 5 episode OVA series, so it's not like it'd take up a whole lot of your time. ;o Other than Zero, you don't really need to see anything else, although you certainly can, if you enjoy old animation.
