kMS changed it to this long before MSEA got the dojo. it's because captains and bowmasters were able to keep a constant rage bar (which means constant invincibility and use of the bamboo skill) at monsters like papulatus, which meant gaining massive amounts of EXP from killing them extremely quickly.

the bolded part is not true. I almost always die at manon in dojo and it still lets me start over at the resting point before gumiho.
