Aha, I didn't actually notice they were widescreen... I think I saw the "1024" and my brain filled in "1024×768" somehow. Doh!
Check your options when uploading; I recently noticed that Photobucket has different options, including resizing and compression. For my images (mostly screenshots, nothing fancy) I use "Reduce to 1 megabyte," and so far nothing has been scaled down.
