Here's an analogy. Forget characters. Your character is a car, and MS is about street racing.
Training your character is like working on your car. It's hard work and takes a ton of time, but it can be fun if you're into it, you get a better feel for your vehicle, and at the end of the day you can get the satisfaction of getting something done the hard way.
You don't have to do it yourself, of course. You can pay others to work on your car while you stand by sipping a Coke (buying leech). You can make robots to get it done faster (leeching yourself - the analogy falls apart a little here, I guess).
Everyone has the same tricked-out ride in the end. Now, it comes down to performance. The person that works on their car manually is obviously going to know more about their car. Does it make them a better driver? Not necessarily. A bad driver is still a bad driver.
Correlation does not imply causation. The person that worked on their car is more likely to be someone who has a passion for cars and driving. The person that paid other people to do it is more likely to be a rich douchebag that just wants a cool car. The same goes for characters in MS. Leechers don't necessarily suck at playing their character. It's just that many leechers tend to be spoiled children that don't take the gameplay seriously. Obviously they're going to suck at the game. But if you're pretty confident in your character control, it's not going to be a problem for you to pick up another character.
