I wouldn't say he was out to fix the world. While he was killed early into his presidency, his days as a president didn't accomplish much. It was Johnson who signed most of the important acts that Kennedy pledged himself to.
As for being beneficial to the world, he caused Bay of Pigs. That is, he tried to assassinate Castro, who then went to the Russians and had their nukes brought to his soil, near the very shores of America. Kennedy "got tough," and Kruschev relented. War was averted
I was born in the Soviet Union, and I can tell you that relying on the sanity of Soviet communist leaders is MADNESS. The Soviet Union was a brutal, genocidal regime where the secret police dragged people to exile or death in the middle of the night and where only the most evil of men held power. Kennedy gambled and won; had he not won, the world would have been nuked. In my eyes, he was a useless jackass that knew how to give pretty speeches, but had none of the experience required for his position. Which is precisely the reason I am deathly afraid now: Obama has the same charisma and the same flaws.
