It's hard for me to tell if you dislike merchants or the drop rate more. If the items have a low drop rate then of course the price is going to be high. Everyone and their mother wants a maple weapon and they're hard to get. Merchants can't effect the market that heavily unless they're insanely rich. It's supply and demand. Rare drop + everyone wants = it's going to be expensive with or without merchants.
