Within the recent past, let's see...

Deimos Rising - simple shooter, kinda hard
Imperishable Night - touhou shooter, also hard (or maybe I just phail at shooters)
Lusternia, Age of Ascension - a superlative MUD
Flyff - eh, stay away
Kingdom of Loathing - browser-based satirical adventuring
LoTR Online - free trial only, but it looked alright
D&D Online - free trial only, real dice > virtual dice
