I used to be like you. Then I, you know, actually played a newer game. Old ones suck serious ass. Glitches everywhere, Psychic types ruled the land, few moves, fewer items, nothing to do after E4 etc. I can go on forever.
tl;dr your nostalgia goggles are on too tight.

Yeah, that's why I don't play the old ones either. I don't like Pokemon, the only thing that keeps the old ones going is nostalgia. Just like how I was excited to sit down and do 35 LPQs for cracked glasses but realized by the second one that LPQ is boring as hell. And that I didn't want to spend 12 hours running around doing the same thing and killing my level 50 character dozens of times so it wouldn't over level.
What's so great about the new games? Other than upgrading the graphics and adding 5 billion more Pokemon and moves, the game doesn't seem to have changed much. You're still a Japanese teenager being raised by a single parent and working your way through the world, collecting badges and upgrading your Pokemon so you can fight the Elite Four.
Pokemon is mediocre as a competitive game. They only have four moves and there's only so many strategies possible. Most of that aspect of the game seems to be stat whoring by breeding dozens of generations of Pokemon and making them fight 255 Magikarps or something. Sounds exciting.
