As for the volunteer thing, I believe they already hired their guys. I think it was the GM hiring for April-June that appeared weeks ago. So nobody should be talking about who's going to be one.
Volunteers are unpaid workers who do it because they want to. They do not get paid, so they do not get hired. Therefore I do not think it is in any way related to the temporary GMs hired for the spring and summer.
As far as SW goes, I think most of the users are fine, and most of the mods are as well. It's just a few bad apples among both crowds (plus, of course, the one whose name shall not be spoken) that make it a bad experience for some people. I prefer the SP community for various reasons, but I have no reason to trash the SW site as a whole.
