My ditto has gone from lvl 11 - lvl 60 just on breeding and staying in the day care.
But the usual point of breeding is to pass certain moves that certain pokemon don't learn.
Such as breeding a Floatzel w/Aqua Jet and and Azumarrill results in a Marrill with Aqua Jet -- a move it can't normally learn through leveling (and it's not a TM)
CAN'T DO THAT WITH A DITTO. 8(
There's also the whole breeding for stats thing, but that's just too much to explain.
