Personally I don't see the value in knowing how the universe was created. We can believe things, and we can spend billions trying to create more concrete evidence, but it doesn't really lead anywhere.
It shows how particles can be formed from pure energy, and it also gives us the opportunity of understanding the way particles interact.
At the periods thing, it was a joke.
