I'd be a bigger fan of Rei if she had long hair, but I never really liked her completely-devoid-of-emotion personality.

She's not bad, I just prefer Asuka a lot more. I think Rei was a lot more likeable in the manga. And Re-Take (if you haven't read that already, DO IT NOW). pineapple. Read the manga, if you haven't too, and then read the hanging scene in Re-Take. pineappleing rips you apart.
