No, a man should never hit a woman. Because a woman can never defense herself from a man attacking her, cause he is much stronger. And also, if the boyfriend/husband hit her once(and he shouldnt), he will hit her again, and again, and again... He will get used to hitting her. it will become a "normal" thing.

No seriously, If a woman put your life in danger, you hit her go to the police? Eventaully, if you do hit her, you will be the blamed one no matter what the case is.
And in the Rihanna and Chris brown case, the police report says that Rihanna saw a message from a woman sent to Chris brown celephone. that started all the fight. Then Chris Brown got mad and start pushing her (while driving in the car), and then she faked a call to her friend telling her to wait at home with the police, at that point, chris brown got pissed and started fisting her like mad.
