I think Magic is a type of money-waster that served as a precursor to Pokemon. People say very good things about it as a "strategic" and "intelligent" game, but in all the time I played it, the real criteria for winning was MONEY. People with the money for Moxes and other unbalanced out of print cards like Swords of the Ages had a serious advantage over those who didn't. At one point when I played Wizards experimented by making common cards "general" in application, and rare cards "specific" in application. Nowhere was that more apparent than the Ice Ages set. Once that flopped, (most of the rares just plain sucked,) they simply started printing overpowered cards and making them repeatedly unusuable in tourneys due to the "currency" issue. After a little of that, I quit. I still have a lot of my rare, expensive cards like Ali from Cairo, but I am pretty sure I am just going to sell them, when I get around to it.
Chess is still probably the best strategy game in existence. If you must have something modern, Starcraft is probably deeper (and certainly more balanced) than Magic. Out of date by 7 years, and STILL the favorite game in Asia; they must have done something right!
