Scum of Maplestory

I knew you weren't talking about mine :p. Is it really fear that makes the sinners good, or is it something else?

Simply fear to suffer more than what they made suffer to others, in the case of hell. If they, however, changes because they realise how bad others feel because of his greedy fault, that's something different.

Dante's Inferno was written a good while ago, based on the lessons of heaven and hell from the medieval age. There were no books or schools back there, so hardly anyone even knew to read. The easiest way to make them behave was by telling them that if they behaved wrong, they'd be horribly punished. You can even see the hell scenes almost everywhere in some churchs. I've studied architecture, and I've seen it everywhere until the creation of the print.
