Well, it's a "claw". As in literally - something you would swipe at people with. Not throw stars.

As Prose said, gun/knuckle users wouldn't necessarily be called 'pirates' in Crimsonwood's time.

Well, since i think he said it was a little obvious, i ran a thesaurus check on pirate. :O I got raider, which can be linked to thief i guess. Maybe in his time the nightshadows took up the melee knuckle and the windraiders took up the ranged gun, and pirates later on founded their class around those weapons.
