Just for more detail, in the manga version:
Shingo is actually just dying of old age. He was Mikami's contractee from very long ago. Or it's implied anyways, I think. Especially with his clothing and haircut. Trousers with suspenders and a dress shirt.
They didn't really touch upon it in the show, but those black marbles are a drug that extends his life, though causing him excruciating pain. When Kuro sees Shingo, she tells Mikami off about how she's a failure of a mototsumitama because of the whole coexisting balance deal, and they argue about using humans. Keita's trust is lost because Mikami says mototsumitama would normally abandon their contractee when they get too old/weak to fight, like Shingo, not because subs wear out and crap faster.
When Shingo dies, Kuro is actually still lying on the ground, bloody. She stumbles up, slouching and covered in blood and bruises, and Mikami still tries to pick a fight, but she breaks down.
In the manga, Kuro actually uses boxing as her fighting style, and Mikami counters this with sumo. Some real style involved in the fights as opposed to just random punches.
This is the bullpomegranate that will happen when you condense an ENTIRE VOLUME into one episode. Well, entire volume minus two chapters. The other chapter was Kuro and Keita befriending that loli, and then the following chapter having the loli be run over by that truck.
